Mission Impact

Our mission drives two strategic priorities. First, we help teenagers and young adults achieve financial independence. Second, we help improve the health of the community.

The Sherrod Foundation is helping to save lives. By focusing on preventing Type 2 diabetes, we will provide the information, knowledge, tools and life-style changes necessary to save lives. According to the CDC, 30+ million adults in the US have diabetes and 1 in 4 of them don't know they have it. 84.1 million have prediabetes.

Our Focus

Focus on our mission

  • Teach teenagers how to deal with major issues affecting them.
  • Teach teenagers how to succeed by giving them business, financial and communication skills.
  • Offer knowledge-based workshops so families can lift themselves from poverty, improve their health and enable their success.

Why we do what we do!

Some members  in communities of color have several disadvantages that keep them from realizing the American dream and achieving success. Three of those issues help drive our passion and focus as a nonprofit.

First is the education gap. For example, teenagers in Clayton County GA , in the southern part of Atlanta, graduate high school at a rate of 73% compared to the US average of 88%. This example shows many of our teenagers are struggling before their adult lives begin.

Second is the wealth gap. There are a lot of research showing the financial gap in communities of color. The education gap, income gap, housing gap,  and the retirement gap creates a massive wealth gap that clearly shows that people of color struggle every day to keep up.

Third is the health gap. Nearly 14% of people in Clayton County GA have diabetes compared to the US average of 7%. COVID-19 exposed the impact of underlying health conditions and how diseases like diabetes can kill. Diabetes disproportionately affects communities of color, even when income is not the issue.

The Sherrod Foundation Inc. is proud to take up the fight by proving the one thing that can never be taken away, knowledge. Give a person fish and they will not be hungry. Teach a person how to fish and they will never be hungry.
